The latest Cancer in Iowa report reveals that Iowa continues to have the second-highest rate of newly diagnosed cancers in the country. This year’s report also emphasizes the importance of survivorship resources.

Cathy Ketton, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2022, understands how critical ongoing support is during treatment and recovery.

“I had to talk to someone about physical activity because after cancer treatment, your lymph nodes, your arms—everything hurts,” Ketton said.

Cancer Rates and Survival in Iowa

According to the report, more than 1 in 20 people in Iowa have had a cancer diagnosis.

“We’re seeing more cancers, but we’re also curing more people, which means we have a growing population of cancer survivors,” said Dr. Richard Deming, Medical Director of MercyOne Cancer Center in Des Moines.

In the past year, Iowa recorded 21,000 new cancer cases and more than 6,000 deaths. However, access to ongoing care, particularly for rural patients, remains inconsistent.

Challenges in Accessing Care

Dr. Deming pointed out that many health systems, including MercyOne, rely on philanthropic funding to cover survivorship services.

“Our system needs to focus on affordable treatment and wellness programs for cancer patients,” he said.

These programs include mental health counseling for patients and families, financial guidance, sexual health and menopause support, palliative care, and survivor support groups.

The report found that two-thirds of Iowa’s cancer survivors were diagnosed within the past five years. Dr. Deming sees this as a sign of progress—while cancer rates remain high, advancements in treatment are improving outcomes.

Efforts to expand survivorship resources will be key in ensuring that more Iowans not only beat cancer but also receive the support they need for long-term health and well-being.
