Douglas County officials have reissued a burn ban, effective immediately, as wildfires continue to spread across the state.

Fire officials announced the decision Thursday afternoon, urging those with active burn permits to fully extinguish any fires before leaving them unattended. Forecasted high winds on Friday could quickly reignite smoldering areas and cause flames to spread.

Wildfires Continue to Burn Across Nebraska

Fires have already scorched thousands of acres of farmland and natural grass, primarily in central and northwestern Nebraska. Crews have been working since Monday to contain the blazes, but dry conditions and strong winds have made firefighting efforts difficult.

Gov. Jim Pillen declared a state of emergency Thursday for fires burning in Dawes and Custer counties.

Burn Ban Reinstated After Just 15 Days

Douglas County had only been without a burn ban for 15 days, following its previous one being lifted on Feb. 12 after significant snowfall in the Omaha metro area.

The Nebraska News weather team forecasts warm conditions on Friday, with steady northwest winds at 25 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph, increasing fire danger.

Nebraska News will continue to monitor the wildfire situation and provide updates.
