Douglas County is offering $5 million in grant funding to local organizations to enhance visitor attractions and boost the local economy.
On Tuesday, County Commissioner Jim Cavanaugh led a meeting explaining the Visitor Improvement Fund grant application process. The program supports nonprofits and public entities looking to improve cultural, recreational, and tourism-related facilities.
Who Can Apply?
Eligible organizations can request funding for projects related to:
- Expanding visitor attractions (sports venues, arts programs, festivals)
- Facility improvements (renovations, repairs, new developments)
Last year, 77 grants were awarded.
Notable Past Recipients
- Omaha Performing Arts (OPA) received $275,000 for event support and repairs at the Orpheum Theater. The venue attracts 150,000 visitors annually, with nearly 20% coming from outside Nebraska.
- Ancient Order of Hibernians used funding for Omaha’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which raises $10,000-$15,000 annually for local charities like Siena Francis House and Heartland Ministries.
