Protein plays a crucial role in muscle growth, energy, and overall well-being, not just for athletes but for people of all ages, according to registered dietitian Amy Goodson.
Why Protein Matters
Goodson explains that lean beef provides essential amino acids needed to maintain muscle mass and stamina, which becomes especially important as people age.
“Protein really plays an important role in building muscle by providing the body with the building blocks that it needs to fuel the body after physical activity,” Goodson said.
The Three-Part Plate Rule
Goodson recommends following a balanced plate approach for meals:
- 1/3 protein – Lean meats like beef or poultry
- 1/3 whole grains – Brown rice, quinoa, or whole wheat bread
- 1/3 colorful fruits and vegetables – Rich in vitamins and minerals
For snacks, she suggests pairing protein with carbohydrates, such as beef jerky with a banana or Greek yogurt with berries.
