With the three-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine approaching, Lincoln’s Ukrainian community gathered outside the Nebraska State Capitol on Saturday to pray, sing, and reflect on the ongoing conflict.
A Community United in Support
The event, organized by Nebraska for Ukraine, aimed to raise awareness and show continued support for Ukraine from thousands of miles away. The gathering included both long-time Lincoln residents of Ukrainian heritage and those who have arrived more recently due to displacement from the war.
Despite the winter weather, attendees shoveled a clearing in the snow to create space for their prayers and songs, ensuring their message of solidarity remained strong.
“We came here to pray for Ukraine,” said Ivan Karpyuk, a 20-year Lincoln resident originally from Ukraine. “To pray for peace, and to pray for soldiers who are fighting. There’s a lot of them in my family—I have a lot of friends and cousins that are on the frontlines.”
Calls for Peace Amid Ongoing War
The event took place as negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia continue in hopes of ending the war.
For many in Lincoln’s Ukrainian community, the conflict remains deeply personal, with loved ones still in Ukraine facing daily danger.
