A tragic accident in South Omaha on Saturday night left one person dead after a car drove into a construction site and landed on another vehicle.

According to Omaha Police, officers responded to reports of a crash near 31st and Q streets around 10:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they discovered two cars in a pit — one resting on top of the other. Authorities said a white Nissan had driven into the construction zone and fallen into the pit. Further investigation revealed that the white Nissan landed on top of a black car already inside.

The driver of the black car, identified as 44-year-old Francisco Hernandez Martinez, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the white Nissan initially left the scene but later returned. Police arrested the driver for DUI. He was not injured.

Investigators are still working to determine how long the black car had been in the pit. Police believe the two vehicles did not enter the pit at the same time.
